Illinois blood donor reaches 20-gallon milestone

Posted: Updated:

MATTOON, Ill. (AP) - A 59-year-old Illinois man has reached his goal of donating 20 gallons of blood - and he's not stopping there.

David Myers tells the Mattoon Journal-Gazette ( his next target is 25 gallons. He estimates he'll hit that goal when he's in his mid-60s if he keeps pace by donating as often as allowed, once every eight weeks.

Myers reached the 20-gallon mark last month during a community blood drive at the Cooks Mills Fire Protection District's pork chop dinner.

Over the years, he's made about 160 donations, potentially saving more than 480 lives. He used to take part in blood drives in Florida when he lived there. Myers says it's "nice to know" he's helped save lives in Florida and Illinois.
