Marine named Illinois Veterans' Affairs director

CHICAGO - A veteran who served three tours of duty with the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan and Iraq has been named acting director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs.

Rodrigo Garcia has been an advocate for student veterans, is national chairman of the Board of Directors for Student Veterans of America, and has also served as assistant director in the state Department of Veterans' Affairs.

Governor Pat Quinn announced Garcia's appointment on Thursday, and referred to him as "battle-tested" as both a Marine and as assistant director of the agency.

The agency serves 744,000 Illinois veterans.
