Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - Family and friends have remembered a University of Illinois doctoral student who died last month of an illness while studying in Brazil.

The university said 29-year-old Ashley S. Walls of Chicago died June 23 in Florianopolis in southeast Brazil. Walls' memorial service was Saturday in Chicago at the UIC Forum.

Her sister Anika Wheaton told the Chicago Sun-Times ( ) that Walls "hit the ground running" in Brazil, talking to citizens, visiting neighborhoods and "really getting into the culture." The newspaper reports she was studying sustainable communities and education policy.

Walls already earned two master's degrees and started her own company when she took the research trip.

Family friend Sandra Robinson told hundreds of mourners that "Ashley did more with 10,890 days than a lot of people do with a lifetime."
