Antique Amoco sign stolen from Illinois museum

Posted: Updated:

WOOD RIVER, Ill. (AP) - A key feature of a small-town museum in southwestern Illinois is missing.

The (Alton) Telegraph (http://bit.ly/W0ECwW ) says someone unbolted an antique Amoco sign in the yard outside the Wood River Museum and made off with it.

Museum workers noticed recently that the metal sign was gone. It had been anchored to the ground outside for several years.

Museum volunteer Cheryl Maguire says she's reported the theft to the Wood River Police Department. Officers have been contacting area scrap yards, pawn shops and antique dealers.

Wood River is a community of around 10,000 residents. It's located about 10 miles northwest of St. Louis.
