University of Illinois fraternity house to receive $4.5 million modernization

CHAMPAIGN - A University of Illinois fraternity is tearing down part of its house to modernize the building, but will keep a portion that was built in 1908.

Todd Salen, treasurer of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity's campaign to finance the $4.5 million rebuilding project, says the fraternity hopes to avoid having the rebuilt house feel like an apartment building.

Salen also says the portion of the house that was built in 1908 will also be restored.

The rebuilt 24,000-square foot building will be able to house 71 people, and the fraternity hopes to move back in by August 2015.
