Search Continues for Decatur Man Who Tried to Run Over Cop with his Car
Decatur police are searching for a man they say tried to run an officer over with his car. It happened Monday night in Decatur in the 200 Block of South College Street. It all started at about 11:30 that night, when two bike patrol officers were called to assist other officers on a domestic battery case. During the search for a suspect, one of the bike officers observed a suspicious gray BMW parked along the west side of College street. He approached the vehicle and found a man sitting in the driver's seat. At that point, the man inside the vehicle started the car and quickly accelerated directly toward a second bike officer that was approaching the scene. That officer jumped off his bike and, in fear of his own safety, fired one gunshot at the car as it passed within feet of hitting him. One neighbor said she heard the gunshot.
"I heard the noise and it thought, by it being the 4th that just passed, that it was somebody still, maybe some of the kids, shooting firecrackers," said Nannie Todd.
The gray BMW was found unoccupied on the 600 block of South Siegel Street. At this time, police are still looking for the driver of the car. Detectives are investigating the driver's actions as an attempted murder. None of the officers involved were hurt.
