Building in Normal leased to potential medical marijuana operation
NORMAL - Deals are being made in cities across Illinois, as aspiring medical marijuana growers are preparing to compete for a limited number of cultivation licenses.
A building in Normal has been leased by Green Thumb Industries, and Chicago-based company, for a possible growing location. The company's founder, Ben Kovler, says that Normal's central location is appealing and the city government runs well. According to Normal City Manager Mark Peterson, several representatives of the company have met with him.
Officials in St. Clair County are also considering a special use permit for a marijuana cultivation center near the village of Marissa.
Twenty-one cultivation permits are expected to be granted by the state now that regulations have been approved. Growers will sell to 60 state-approved dispensaries.
