Decatur – 50 years ago the Decatur Macon County Opportunities Corporation, DMCOC, opened its doors in Decatur.Today, it serves low income families and the elderly.
One of its biggest and most successful programs is the Anna Waters Head Start program.Nearly 400 youngsters are served each year.
“Our Head Start program is tops,” board president Mark Wicklund told WAND News.
DMCOC Executive Director Gail Evans joined the agency in 1965.She says the Head Start program requires participation by the entire family.
“Early childhood education is the foundation for education,” Evans stated.“Now we have to send stuff home for the mother and father to work with the kids on.”
DMCOC also provides a low income home energy assistance program (LIHEAP) to help pay utility bills.Seniors are also provided hot nutritious meals at six sites in Decatur and three in Macon County through another program.
