Lt. Governor Sheila Simon launches Virtual Legal Clinic
DANVILLE - Illinois Lt. Governor Sheila Simon joined advocates at Crosspoint Human Services on Friday to launch her latest Virtual Legal Clinic, a program that helps downstate domestic violence survivors access free legal counsel.
The Virtual Legal Clinic is piloted by the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Simon's office. Twenty counties are currently served by the program, with a projected 40 counties being served in 2015.
The program would allow domestic violence survivors in underserved communities to receive free legal counsel from lawyers in urban areas online via webcam. Simon says the program fills a gap in legal services in rural areas, which have few attorneys practicing family law.
