Illinois State Board of Education looking for volunteers for bilingual council
SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois State Board of Education is seeking seven new members to serve on its bilingual education advisory council.
State law established the council over 40 years ago. The council recently contributed to recommendations for teacher standards, qualifications, and evaluations. According to officials, a key point of the council's focus is developing recommendations and advice for the state board concerning English learners.
The new members would be expected to attend four meetings per year and would serve three-year terms. The members would also participate in additional gatherings and special projects. Bilingual program directors, parents, university faculty, superintendents, and members of community organizations have served as council members.
The new terms will begin in September. Candidates must apply to the state board by July 28.
