Medical marijuana zoning rules approved in Aurora

AURORA - Aldermen in the second largest city in Illinois have unanimously approved new medical marijuana zoning rules.

They require marijuana retailers and growers in Aurora to submit their plans for security, operations, and disposal to the city after being issued a state license.

Aurora Planning Director Stephanie Phifer says marijuana dispensary employees are required to be at least 21 years old and will have to pass a criminal background check.

Illinois is among 23 states authorizing the use of medical marijuana.  The Illinois Department of Agriculture is expected to issue 21 cultivation permits around the state later this year, and those growers will sell to 60 state-approved dispensaries.
