Chicago man sentenced to 40 years after DNA test linked him to sexual assault
CHICAGO - A Chicago man will spend the next 40 years behind bars after being convicted of sexual assault when a rape kit linked him to an attack in 2002.
Steven Murphy, 36, was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in October 2002. Following the attack, the victim reported the incident and gave her clothes to Harvey police. The rape kit went untested for five years, eventually being discovered during a raid of the Harvey Police Department by the Cook County sheriff's department and Illinois State Police in 2007.
According to officials, investigators were led to Murphy after his DNA was entered into a statewide database following a 2007 burglary conviction. Murphy received his sentence on Thursday.
