Quinn signs extension to Illinois drone law

SPRINGFIELD - Legislation that would extend state drone regulations to privately-owned craft has been signed by Governor Pat Quinn.

Drones are unmanned aircraft that can be used for surveillance.  Last year lawmakers adopted a plan to regulate law enforcement agency-owned drones to protect privacy.

However, the American Civil Liberties Union said the law needed to apply to all drone, as more and more private operators are conducting surveillance, and supporters of the legislation say the measure ensures citizens' expectations of privacy.

The law ensures that private operators cannot be hired by police agencies to do surveillance.
