Legislation that expands ban on student cyberbullying approved by Quinn

CHICAGO - Legislation that extends the state's ban on student cyberbullying to include actions outside of school has been signed by Governor Pat Quinn.

The measure, sponsored by state Representative Laura Fine and state Senator Ira Silverstein, was signed on Friday, will prohibit the bullying of students via electronic technology even when they're not in school, and applies to devices that aren't used or owned by schools.

The measure also expands on previous legislation that bans cyberbullying in schools, and requires schools to investigate any act of bullying that disrupts education processes or school operations.

The new law will take effect on January 1.
