Inmate seeking DNA tests in 1998 smothering death

BLOOMINGTON - Lawyers representing an inmate accused of the 1998 smothering death of his daughter are awaiting a central Illinois judge's decision on whether to allow genetic testing of evidence in the case.

On Friday, lawyers for the Illinois Innocence Project insisted that testing on nine items of evidence could clear Bart McNeil, 54.  McNeil is serving a life sentence in connection with the death of his daughter, but has argued that a former girlfriend who was convicted in the 2011 strangling of her mother-in-law should be questioned as a suspect in his daughter's death.

McNeil's petition for DNA testing has been taken under the advisement of McLean County Circuit Judge Scott Drazewski.
