New law changes Illinois ATV registration fee schedule

SPRINGFIELD - The registration fee for those who own all-terrain vehicles and only use them on private property has been eliminated due to legislation that was signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn on Friday.

State Senator Dave Koehler sponsored the measure, and he says that it refines a 2012 registration law.  Koehler also says that ATV owners want to support state parks, but thought that the fee schedule in 2012 was unfair.

The $15 registration fee will be reduced to $10 for smaller ATVs, which are usually used by children.  Golf carts, vehicles for disabled people, ATVs used by government officials or farmers, ATVs used in local and state parks, and ATVs used only in competitions or on private land are exempt from the fee.

The new law will take effect immediately.
