Missing 3-year-old located in cornfield

Posted:
ALTAMONT - After a search that lasted nearly three hours, a 3-year-old girl who was reported missing was found safe in a south-central Illinois cornfield.

On Thursday, Altamont firefighters responded to a report that the girl was missing from her home.  The girl's mother and grandmother told authorities they had last seen her in the family's garage.

About 60 first responders in Effingham County and nearby areas searched the cornfield behind the family's house, assisted by planes and drones.  Eventually, two firefighters heard her crying and found her about an eighth of a mile away from the house.

According to the family, the girl may have been following a chicken when she went into the cornfield.
