Family of deceased Southern Illinois University student sues Carbondale

CARBONDALE - A lawsuit has been filed by the family of a deceased 19-year-old Southern Illinois University Student against Carbondale, its police chief, and the last person that saw him alive.

On Thursday, Pravin Varughese's mother filed a lawsuit accusing the city and its police chief of negligence.  The lawsuit also seeks over $1 million for wrongful death from the man who last saw him alive.

Varughese's body was found in a wooded area in February about a week after he went missing.  According to authorities, there wasn't evidence of foul play and the likely cause of death was cold exposure.  However, the lawyer representing the family says that a private autopsy shows that Varughese was beaten.

The case is under review by the state's attorney's office.
