Illinois State Fair harness races postponed due to track conditions

SPRINGFIELD - Harness races at the Illinois State Fair have been postponed due to unfavorable track conditions.  The races will now be run starting at noon on Wednesday.

Officials say nearly three dozen horses were quarantined over concerns that they may have been exposed to an equine herpes virus after a horse that had shared quarters with six other horses in Springfield started to show symptoms consistent with the virus.

However, Illinois State Fair spokesman Jeff Squibb says that tests for the virus came back negative, meaning the quarantine could be lifted.  Squibb also says that there's no threat of humans contracting the virus.
