Clinton Landfill owners to appeal ban on PCBs and gas plant waste
CLINTON - A central Illinois landfill's owners are planning to appeal a ban on the disposal of PCBs and manufactured gas plant waste, saying the facility would pose no safety or health threat.
Municipal officials from around central Illinois have opposed plans to bury PCBs at the Clinton Landfill due to concerns of contaminating the Mahomet aquifer, located beneath the facility.
Last month, state environmental officials blocked the PCB storage plan, and also forced the facility to stop accepting waste from manufactured gas plants. Both kinds of waste contain carcinogenic chemicals. However, landfill officials say the facility can safely hold the chemicals.
