600 employees at Deere factories to face lay offs

MOLINE - Agricultural equipment giant Deere has announced over 600 employees in 4 of its Midwest factories will face an indefinite lay off.

In a news release distributed on Friday, Deere & Co. said that "to remain globally competitive, the company must align the size of its manufacturing workforce with market demands for products."

The affected sites are located in Coffeyville, Kansas, Ankeny, Iowa, East Moline, Illinois, and Moline, Illinois.  Seasonal and inventory adjustment shutdowns and temporary layoffs will be implemented by the company at the four affected factories, as well as one in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Earlier this week, Deere & Co. announced that sales have weakened, and its third-quarter profit dropped 15 percent.

Deere is the world's largest farm equipment supplier.
