Decatur City Council may reconsider radio communications contract
DECATUR - According to officials, the Decatur City Council may consider rescinding its approval of a radio communications contract due to a backup system failing after a lightning strike knocked out the main system.
The council had voted to purchase a Motorola Solutions, Inc. system called StarCom21, which has been used by the Macon County Sheriff's Department and city police since 2009. However, lightning knocked out the system on August 5, and a backup system failed.
This caused law enforcement agencies to revert to the former analog radio system for about 21 hours. Officials also say the system failed again on August 9 for a total of 35 minutes.
The city council is expected to discuss the radio communication system during their meeting on Monday.
