Sangamon County committee approves $2.6 million settlement

SPRINGFIELD - A Sangamon County committee has approved a multimillion-dollar settlement offer to the family of a man who performed as a clown who died in jail in 2007.

The county board's civil liabilities committee signed off on the $2.7 million settlement on Monday.  The settlement will be brought before the full county board for approval.  The county says it has spent about $2.7 million in legal fees since the beginning of the lawsuit in 2008, and that it's not admitting liability.

A. Paul Carlock, 57, died in a hospital following a physical struggle with guards at the county jail.  Carlock had been arrested on federal child pornography and molestation charges.

A sheriff has denied any wrongdoing by jail staff.
