Urbana police seeking information on July shooting

URBANA - The Urbana Police Department is seeking the assistance of the public in identifying suspects in an early morning shooting last month that severely injured a woman.

Urbana police say on July 30 at about 4:35 a.m., officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired near the entrance of the Hamilton on the Park apartment complex in Urbana.  Upon arriving, officers found a woman that had been struck by gunfire down on the sidewalk near the entrance.

The Urbana Police Department has identified the woman as Jenyra Reeves, 22.  Reeves had been staying with friends in the 1300 block of Ellis, about three blocks away from the scene of the shooting.  At this point in the investigation, police say that Reeves was struck in the head by intentional gunfire, and that she was not specifically targeted due to her identity.  Police say they believe Reeves was targeted for simply being in the vicinity of the apartment complex.

Urbana police have recovered nearby surveillance video that shows two cars speeding away from the area after the shooting.  Both cars were being driven westbound into Champaign.

Jenyra Reeves will require long term health care as a result of the shooting.  Police say it is believed she will lose total vision in one eye, and severely diminished vision in the other.  Reeves also suffered a traumatic brain injury that will affect her memory, emotions, planning, and motivation throughout her life.  Reeves remains hospitalized, but is no longer in critical condition.

The investigation into this shooting is ongoing.  Anyone with information on this incident is urged to call the Urbana Police Department at (217) 384-2320 or Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-TIPS.
