Construction on $20 million Springfield underpass begins

Posted:
SPRINGFIELD - Officials attended a Springfield groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday for a project that would combine rail lines running through Springfield into a single corridor.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin was among the officials that attended the ceremony, which marks the start of construction for a $20 million underpass at Carpenter Street.

Most of the construction's cost is being funded by a $14.4 million federal grant, with work estimated to be finished by fall 2015.

The underpass is part of a plan to combine several rail lines into a single route 10th street.  The project would improve Amtrak passenger service and reduce accidents and delays at crossings.
