Urbana firefighters respond to afternoon apartment fire

URBANA - The Urbana Fire Department responded to an apartment fire that occurred on Thursday afternoon.

According to officials, firefighters responded to a report of a fire at Eastland Suites at about 3:50 p.m.  Upon arriving, firefighters quickly worked to put out the flames.  The fire was confined to a single apartment, and no one was home at the time.  However, there were three dogs and one cat in the apartment.  Two dogs needed treatment and were transported to a veterinary clinic, but did not survive.

Fire officials say the occupant was displaced overnight, and the estimated damage to the building is between $35,00 to $40,000.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
