Dangerous temperatures forcing some Illinois schools to close

CHAMPAIGN - With high heat and humidity lingering across the state, several central Illinois communities are closing their schools early.

On Monday, the Nation Weather Service issued heat warnings in most of Illinois, excluding some of the state's northern counties.

High temperatures in central Illinois are expected to reach the mid-90s, and heat-index readings are expected to soar well above 100.  Many schools that lack air conditioning are planning to send students home early.

Several cooling centers have been opened across the state by the Illinois Department of Human Services to help those who don't have access to air conditioning.

According to the National Weather Service, the dangerous temperatures will return on Tuesday before falling back on Wednesday.
