Weekend mediation session fails to end teacher strike
GALESBURG - Thousands of Galesburg students will be staying home as a weekend mediation session between the board of education and a teachers union ended without an agreement to a contract.
The Galesburg Education Association and the District 205 Board of Education met for four hours on Sunday, but ended their talks without a resolution.
The next scheduled meeting is expected to be held on Tuesday. However, the superintendent says the two sides won't meet without a mediator, meaning the 4,500 students who have missed eight days of school already will likely miss a couple more.
According to both sides, the only issue remaining is that of a ranking system for laying off and hiring back teachers. More than 600 employees have taken part in the strike since it began on August 13.
