Ribbon cutting ceremony held in Springfield to celebrate Kid-Friendly Park Zones

SPRINGFIELD - A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held by the Sangamon County Department of Public Health, Springfield Park District, and multiple Sangamon County Park Districts to celebrate a recently-launched Kid-Friendly Park Zone initiative.

The ceremony will be held at the main playground area in Washington Park on Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at 5:15 p.m.

As part of this initiative, Sangamon County Park Districts are invited to install Kid-Friendly Park Zone signs in areas where children play.  The signs serve as a reminder to keep playground areas smoke free.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General's report, children can be especially vulnerable to any amount of secondhand smoke, and may lead to ear infections, lung problems, and severe asthma attacks.

The initiative was approved and funded by the Illinois Department of Public Health as a part of the Illinois Tobacco Free Communities Grant, and was sponsored by the Sangamon County Department of Public Health.
