Former Springfield teacher sentenced to 7 years for aggravated criminal sexual abuse

SPRINGFIELD - A former Springfield teacher has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually abusing a boy more than a decade ago.

Steven Battles, 59, received his sentence in Sangamon Circuit Court Monday.  Battles pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for fondling a 10-year-old boy between 1999 and 2002.

According to officials, Battles had a history of questionable behavior during the 17 years he worked with District 186.  Battles was accused of giving back rubs, letting students sit on his lap, and telephoning male students.  He was fired in 2009.

Battles is currently being held in county jail until his processing by the Illinois Department of Corrections.
