Central Illinois man arrested in connection with the death of his girlfriend
MACON COUNTY - A central Illinois man is in jail after Macon County Sheriff's deputies found his deceased girlfriend's body hidden in tall weeds near an intersection in Macon County.
According to the Macon County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Pit Road and Sable Road, where they found a deceased woman in tall weeds near the intersection. Upon further investigation, deputies discovered that the Decatur Police Department had a missing person report issued for Janice Cole, 53. Deputies also learned that the last person to see Cole was her boyfriend, 64-year-old Eddie Sutters, and that he was being interviewed about the missing person report.
A Macon County Sheriff's detective and a Decatur Police Department detective then interviewed Sutters. According to the Macon County Sheriff's detective, during the interview Sutters admitted to punching Cole in the face while driving on August 23 at some point between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. Sutters told detectives that he was the driver, and Cole was his passenger. The Macon County Sheriff's detective says that after Sutters admitted to striking Cole, Sutters says he drove to the intersection where the woman was found, drug Cole out of the vehicle, and ran her over.
The detective then said that Sutters admitted to dragging Cole into the weeds and leaving the scene. Sutters also identified the clothing Janice was wearing, and identified a photo of the deceased woman as Janice Cole.
Following the interview, Sutters was taken into custody. He remains in custody at the Macon County Jail on $5 million bond. We will bring you more details as they become available.
