University of Illinois officials plan to increase cell phone reception at Memorial Stadium

CHAMPAIGN - Sports fans who frequent Memorial Stadium may notice an improvement in their cell phone reception soon, University of Illinois officials say.

The university is planning to boost cell phone reception this season through added capacity, with hopes of adding a more permanent digital antenna system next year.  Eventually, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics wants to provide Internet access to fans in the stadium.

The goal of these projects is to allow people at the stadium to post on social media, order food on their electronic devices, and stream video in a way that wouldn't overload networks or consume data plans.

Other schools have made similar upgrades, such as the universities of Wisconsin, Penn State, Nebraska, Stanford, and Texas Christian.
