Southern Illinois man facing multiple felony charges for alleged copper wire theft

LITCHFIELD - A southern Illinois man is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly stealing copper wire from cellphone towers and fighting with authorities while resisting arrest.

Lee Franks, 32, has been charged with three felony counts of theft of more than $500, two felony counts of aggravated battery of a police officer, and one felony count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Franks recruited a minor to help steal copper from cellphone towers in rural Macoupin and Madison counties.  Authorities say they found Franks in East Alton on Tuesday, and that he fought with officers when they tried to take him into custody.

Franks is currently held in Madison County Jail on $100,000 bond.
