Opponents of eastern Illinois coal mine trying to gain more support
HOMER - Opponents of a proposed eastern Illinois coal mine are trying to gain support as state regulators consider whether a permit will be granted to the operation.
Homer landowner Sue Smith opposes Sunrise Coal's plan to open a mine near town. Smith says she hopes people tell the Illinois Department of Natural Resources about their opposition during the current public comment period.
IDNR's decision on the permit is the last step before Sunrise could open the mine.
Opponents worry that the runoff from the mine could pollute Salt Fork River. However, Sunrise Coal says the mine would bring an economic boost to the area, and would also be heavily regulated.
