Downtown Springfield Inc. asking the city for help

SPRINGFIELD - A not-for-profit economic development organization that's promoted the central business district in Springfield for 20 years is reaching out to the city for help in covering the costs of major entertainment events.

Downtown Springfield Inc. has recorded losses at several of its summer events, with bad weather being partially to blame.  As a result, the organization has only raised $20,000 of the $50,000 it needs to stay operational through the end of the year.

According to Downtown Springfield Inc. Director Victoria Ringer, the organization isn't expecting cash from the city, but it does want help with services such as policing, utilities, and cleanup at major events.

Springfield Mayor Mike Houston sits on the organization's board of directors.  Houston says the city has helped where it could, but that he is open to discussions.
