Posted: Updated:

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - Law enforcement officers from Illinois and Missouri are mourning a police dog that died after suffering heat stroke during training.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports ( ) officers from both states attended a memorial service in the East St. Louis city council chambers Thursday. Officer Felix Arnold carried the ashes of his canine partner, Simmie.

Two ladder trucks hoisted the American flag nearby and police cars drove by with sirens blaring.

Arnold told the crowd he had lost his "best friend" and now has a void in his life. He says Belleville Animal Clinic employees "did all they could" to save Simmie. The German shepherd died at the clinic last week.

The officer who trained Simmie is raising money to help Arnold get a new canine.
