Chilean flamingos hatched at Scovill Zoo

DECATUR - Five new baby Chilean flamingos have been hatched at Decatur's Scovill Zoo, but their parents aren't among any of the zoo's adult flamingos.

The new additions, as well as three more unhatched eggs, came from Oklahoma City Zoo.  That zoo has a flamingo population so strong, it doesn't need any of the eggs it had this year, so those eggs were offered to other facilities.

The Decatur zoo's flamingos only laid infertile eggs, and according to Scovill Zoo assistant director Ken Frye, that's not unusual.

Zoo director Dave Webster said the fertile eggs were swapped in for the infertile ones.
