Grand jury clears police of any wrongdoing in 2 southwestern Illinois shootings

GRANITE CITY - A Madison County Grand Jury has cleared Granite City police officers of any wrongdoing in two shootings, including one that resulted in a man's death.

According to Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons, one of the cases involved two officers fatally shooting Stephen Minch, 45, after Minch allegedly pointed a gun at the officers and refused to put it down.  Police say that shooting happened after Minch called 911 and was believed to be distraught.

The other case happened last month, when an officer shot and wounded Thomas Noser, 52, after Noser reportedly refused orders to drop a knife.  Investigators allege that Noser had just used a baseball bat to beat his 76-year-old mother and another man.

Noser is currently in jail, and faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, domestic batter, and felony assault.
