Caterpillar Inc. to open new laboratory at University of Illinois

CHAMPAIGN - Caterpillar Inc. has announced plans to open a new data analytics laboratory at the University of Illinois' Research Park later this year.

Caterpillar already operates a center at Research Park, where new products are simulated and developed using computer-aided engineering.  The current center employs 55 people in addition to the 60 students working there.

According to Caterpillar's chief technology officer Gwenne Henricks, the new lab will focus on analyzing data on areas like fleet and equipment management, and will rely on students and university faculty for some of its work.  Henricks also said it isn't known how many people will be hired to work at the new laboratory.
