Camp Butler National Cemetery to honor veterans

CLEAR LAKE - On October 1, 2014, Camp Butler National Cemetery will host its quarterly ceremony to honor veterans who have been recently interred at the cemetery, but were not afforded funeral honors at the time of their burial.

The ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m., and the public is invited to attend.  An estimated 11 veterans will be honored during this ceremony.

Every honorably discharged veteran is authorized funeral honors provided by the Department of Defense, but some veterans are not given those honors at the time of their burial because family members could not attend the funeral.

The ceremony will include posting of the colors, welcoming remarks, reading of the names of the veterans being honored, flag-folding, the firing of a rifle volley, and the playing of "Taps."

Several local veteran organizations have agreed to assist in rendering the honors, or by representing their group by being present during the service.
