Illinois' corn harvest still behind average pace

SPRINGFIELD - According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's latest weekly update, the pace of Illinois' corn harvest continues to be slow compared to the average over the last five years.

Just six percent of the state's corn crop has been harvested, which is two percentage points above last year's rate, but down from the 23 percent five-year average.  Approximately 83 percent of the corn crop in Illinois has been rated either good or excellent, and 76 percent of the state's soybean crop has been rated good or excellent.

The USDA also reports that 56 percent of the corn crop has reached maturity, down seven percentage points from the average.
