St. John's Children's Hospital officials say donations were not stolen

SPRINGFIELD - According to St. John's Children's Hospital officials, an official accused of embezzling $500,000 from the institution since 2008 did not take any money received as charitable donations.

St. John's Children's Hospital executive director Margaret Curtin, 55, was charged with felony theft on Tuesday.  She was released on bond from the Sangamon County Jail after paying $100,000 in cash.

Hospital spokesman Brian Reardon declined to comment on what sources of revenue may be involved in this case, but did say that there is no indication that any donated funds were misused.  Reardon adds that Curtin has been suspended without pay.

The Friends of St. John's Foundation is a nonprofit group that raises money to support the children's hospital and other programs.  The foundation's chief development officer Bev Neisler says Curtin didn't have access to donations because the foundations and the children's hospital are separate.
