Chicago man charged with making bomb, violence threats against university

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS - Federal prosecutors say a Chicago man has been charged with making violence and bomb threats against Southern Illinois University staff, faculty, and students in 2012 and 2013.

Derrick Burns, 21, is accused of making the threats on October 10, 2012, October 15, 2012, December 6, 2012, and October 1, 2013.  U.S. Attorney Stephen Wigginton did not reveal a motive for the threats or details on what led to Burns' arrest.

The charges were filed in southern Illinois, but Burns appeared in a Chicago court on Monday, where he was held without bond pending a detention hearing on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Burns faces up to 10 years of imprisonment and up to $250,000 in fines for each of the eight counts filed against him.
