Logan County residents concerned with coal-waste facility expansion

ELKHART - Logan County residents are voicing their concerns that a proposed expansion of a coal-waste storage facility might affect the quality of their air and water.

More than 250 people attended the Logan County's Zoning Board of Appeals' meeting Thursday night.  Arch Coal Inc. is requesting that more than 300 acres of agricultural land be reclassified in order to expand an existing coal-waste storage facility.  The board would have to approve the zoning board's decision.

Earlier this week, the mine's operators issued a statement assuring residents that the storage facility was being "carefully engineered to operate safely, and to ensure protection of the environment."  However, several residents who attended the meeting said they had concerns about groundwater contamination.
