Illinois residents encouraged to support local farmers during October

ILLINOIS - The Illinois Stewardship Alliance is encouraging residents to support their local farmers' markets throughout October during "Shop-tober at the Farmers' Market."

The statewide nonprofit organization says the month-long campaign provides an opportunity for people to help support local farmers at the end of the regular market season.

According to the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Illinois residents spend $4.3 billion on food each year, with about $4 billion being used to purchase food produced in other states.  The group says if residents spent 15 percent of their food budget on locally-produced food, it would put $600 million back into the Illinois economy.
