Man accused in SIU threat case to have bond hearing

BENTON - In an update to a story WAND brought you last week, a Chicago man who allegedly made threats of violence and bombings to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale will soon find out if he can be released on bond.

On Tuesday, prosecutors plan to appeal a ruling made by a federal judge last week that would allow Derrick Burns, 21, to be eligible for bond.  Prosecutors are also asking a judge to order a test to determine Burns' mental fitness.

Investigators say Burns is charged with eight felonies linked to threatening mailings made in 2012 and 2013.  Prosecutors said that Burns allegedly threatened violent acts, such as bombings and beheadings.  The FBI adds that most of the threatening letters suggest that Southern Illinois University would be targeted.
