HINES - Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital's director has announced her retirement.

On Tuesday, Joan Ricard said that she would retire as director on October 31, 2014, after 37 years of service with the Department of Veterans Affairs.  She called her Veterans Affairs career a "rewarding journey."

The Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital has been investigated in response to allegations of secret waiting lists to hide delays in appointments, and U.S. Senator Mark Kirk has called for Ricard's removal.  However, Ricard has said there are no secret waiting lists.

A union that represents hospital workers has also accused the facility of having leaking water and mold.  Hospital officials say the mold was removed and efforts were made to stop the leaks.

Ricard's replacement has not yet been chosen.
