Some central Illinois residents question safety of oil drilling near aquifer

BLOOMINGTON - Proposed plans for oil drilling near the Mahomet Aquifer in Downs were protested by some central Illinois residents during a meeting this week.

Minard Run Oil Company visited the village to explain how their oil drilling plans would follow Illinois Department of Natural Resources regulations.  Minard Run's vice president says the company has a good track record because its standards are regulated by state agencies, and that those regulations are strictly adhered to.

However, during the three-hour meeting some protesters questioned the safety of drilling activities near a water source, with one protester asking how Minard Run would respond to a potential spill.  A spokesperson for the oil company responded, saying it would address potential issues as they come.

Another zoning board meeting will be held this month.
