Springfield police make arrest in Friday morning armed robbery

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield police say they have arrested a suspect in the armed robbery of a gas station Friday morning.

Authorities say at approximately 10:30 a.m. on October 10, Springfield police officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Citgo Gas Station on the 600 block of N. 9th Street.  Upon arriving, officers learned that a male walked into the business, displayed a black handgun, and demanded money.  After taking the money, the suspect left on foot.

Shortly after, officers in the area found an individual matching the suspect's description near Enos Park.  The suspect, Tanner Carney, 21, was taken into custody.  Authorities say when officers searched Carney's backpack, they found a loaded handgun.  Officers say they also found cash on Carney as well.

Carney was taken to the police station for questioning, and was later taken to the Sangamon County Jail.  Carney faces preliminary charges of armed robbery, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and armed violence.
