Rantoul residents to debate on monument's fate

RANTOUL - Rantoul officials are asking residents what they would like to happen to a monument that has stood in the village for almost five decades.

Village officials want to demolish the monument, a now-defunct, rusting Minuteman missile, in the name of modernization.  Other village residents believe the missile to be a relic of Chanute Air Force Base.

Unfortunately, the missile cannot be moved as its base is anchored down by tons of concrete.  That narrows the options down to demolition or keeping the monument where it is.

Rantoul Mayor Chuck Smith is asking the public's opinion on this matter, but describes the missile as "an obstacle in the way of progress."  However, Rantoul Historical Society Director Kaye Heath disagrees with Smith's opinion, saying the missile has become a symbol of the community.
